A Page Editor feature let me crop all the images to the same size-essential for good-looking PDF output-and provided an eraser tool that made it easy to remove markings that would only get in the way of OCR processing. When I scanned a PDF image of a pamphlet, Finereader instantly divided two-page spreads into separate pages in Omnipage I had to search for an option setting that performed that task, and in Readiris I was never able to split the pages.įinereader shows its special strengths when working with difficult documents that mix together different page sizes or that have extraneous marks on some or all pages. Unlike Omnipage, its interface is always clear and straightforward, and required no random menu-diving to find the features I wanted. Where Finereader impressed me most-and where it stands out from the competition-is in its handling of complex OCR operations I performed manually. You can add or modify these automated tasks from an Automation Manager that includes options to send the resulting document by e-mail and perform other post-processing tasks.- Next: OCR: Beyond the Basics OCR: Beyond the Basicsīy now, you can expect any high-end OCR app to offer these options, and to perform these standard tasks well-and Finereader performs them all extremely well.

When the full Finereader application starts up, it optionally displays a list of standard automated tasks, such as scanning into an Excel worksheet or Word document, converting a digital camera image to a Word document, or scanning into an HTML file. This powerful new tool may make even those who are satisfied with their current OCR consider upgrading. The full Finereader application doesn't even need to be open when you do this. Instead, you click on the Screenshot Reader's taskbar tray icon, draw a box around the text you want to copy, and wait a few seconds for the Screenshot Reader to perform its OCR magic and copy the text to the clipboard or into a new file in Word or Excel. If you're trying to copy text from a scanned image of a document in a Web browser-for example, in Google Books, or on site that displays police reports and similar documents-you don't have to transcribe the text by hand. A Corporate version adds automated features that process files dropped into "hot folders" or e-mail inboxes, and can be set up so that one person imports documents into Finereader while someone else, working a different machine, spell-checks the output.īefore I go into detail about the main app, I want to mention my favorite Finereader 10 innovation: a "Screenshot Reader" feature that ought to be part of all OCR software.

I tested Finereader's Professional version, which is the lowest-featured version that the vendor offers.

To be fair, however, in some rare cases Omnipage correctly interpreted layouts that required manual tweaking in Finereader. Documents that required tedious manual tweaking to get the correct output in Readiris Corporate 12 and Omnipage were recognized instantly in Finereader. Nothing matches Finereader 10's ability to produce editable output from complex and hard-to-read pages, and no other OCR app matches its ability to detect automatically which parts of a document are text, tables, or images. Finereader ran almost neck and neck with Omnipage Professional 17 this year (that app is a bit faster and has some high-end automation features lacking in Finereader), but if you care about getting the best possible OCR output with the fewest possible frustrations and annoyances, Finereader 10 is the clear choice.
